SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS
Our Curriculum and Learning Areas
All of our learning at this level is cross-curricular, consisting of the following learning areas:
PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT: The syllabus helps students to develop a positive sense of themselves and others; to form positive relationships and instill respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their emotions; to understand appropriate behavior in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Language development gives students opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Students will learn to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write and also be introduced to a wide range of reading materials to encourage a love of literacy.
MATHEMATICS: The syllabus provides students with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, solving simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, space, time and measure. Students will become familiar with sequencing, sorting, estimation and patterns.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND CULTURAL AWARENESS: Students are able to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, history and the environment.
ARTS & CRAFTS: Students explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as learn to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play and design.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION: The syllabus provides opportunities for students to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Students will improve their strength and refine motor skills and begin to manage and assess appropriate risk. Students are taught the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food, sleep, hygiene and general well-being.
